Chana Dal Chutney Recipe with Video

Chana dal chutney recipe (चना दाल चटनी रेसिपी) is a spicy condiment recipe from Indian cuisine. It is made by chana dal (chickpea lentil or Bengal gram), cumin seeds, asafoetida, yogurt, black pepper and some more spices.

Chana dal chutney recipe is served at room temperature as an accompaniment with many India dishes including Idli, Dosa, Sambar, Uttpam, Paratha etc.

Bengal gram is roasted with very small amount of mustard oil until light brown. Dried whole red chili peppers and cumin seeds are also roasted. Aroma of the spices enhanced by roasting.

Roasted Bengal gram, cumin seeds, red chili peppers, salt, asafoetida and whole black peppers grind together to make fine powder.

This powder is mixed with yogurt to make creamy sour paste.

Curry leaves, black mustard seeds and chopped green chili peppers are fried and pour hot over the mixture to temper the chutney.

It is a quick and easy vegetarian chutney recipe. You can instantly prepare it for your lunch, dinner or breakfast.

Chana Dal Chutney Recipe : Step by Step Instructions
  1. Heat few drops of oil in a pan and roast bengal gram in it until light brown.
  2. Turn this roasted bengal gram in a plate and let it cool.
  3. Roast cumin seeds and dried whole red chili pepper one by one in the same way.
  4. Grind these roasted spices with salt, asafoetida and black pepper to make fine powder and then mix with yogurt.
  5. Now heat remaining oil in a pan and fry mustard seeds, green chili pepper and curry leaves in it.
  6. Pour it hot over yogurt mixture to temper your chutney.
  7. Delicious chana dal chutney is ready. Serve it at room temperature with Idli, Dosa, Uttpam, Sambar, Paratha etc.
