Mir mine, also known as Mirny mine is the largest open pit diamond mine in the world. It is located in Mirny, Eastern Siberia, Russia. There are many amazing facts associated with this diamond mine.

  • Depth of the mine is 525 meters (1,722 ft).
  • Diameter of the mine is 1,200 m (3,900 ft).
  • It is 2nd largest excavated hole in the world.
  • It is 4th deepest mine in the world.
  • It sucked many helicopters because of the high downward air flow.
  • It was discovered by Soviet geologists Yuri Khabardin, Ekaterina Elagina and Viktor Avdeenko on June 13, 1955.
  • The mine was producing 10,000,000 carats (2,000 kg) of diamond per year in 1960s.
  • The Mir mine was permanently closed in 2011, after excavating tonnes of gem quality diamond.
