This fort is worldwide known for its unique star shape. Undoubtedly, Fort Bourtange is an example of architectural excellence. William the Silent planned this fort to built there to control the only road between the city of Groningen and Germany, so that the communications between Groningen and Germany should to break off. This road was controlled by the Spaniards during the time of the Eighty Years’ War.
