Sambar is an essential and traditional South Indian dish prepared habitually in every household. It accompanies almost every meal in South India. It is a perfect cereal and pulses combination that packs in the goodness of protein and carbohydrates due to the existence of number of veggies and tuvar dal which provides you fibre, minerals and other essential nutrients.

South Indian make it even more than once a day – for breakfast and later for lunch or dinner. It is a versatile dish that can be taken with rice, idli, dosa, vada, uttapam (upma), and just with any South Indian snack.

Sambar Recipe in Detail :
  1. Soak dal for 15 minutes
  2. Mean while Heat oil in pressure cooker and crackle Asafoetida, black mustard and curry leaves.
  3. Add whole red chili pepper and chopped onion in it and cook on medium flame for 5 minutes.
  4. Now add tomatoes, bottle gourd and all the spices and cook on medium flame for 5 minutes.
  5. Add sugar, dal and water in it then close the lid of pressure cooker and cook it on medium flame until 4 whistles.
  6. Let the pressure cooker cool itself then open the lid and add tamarind pulp in sambar.
  7. You can add water in sambar if required.
  8. Finally cook it on medium flame with open lid for 10 minutes.
  9. Sambar is ready to serve hot with idli, dosa, medu vada, uttapam and coconut chutney.
