Modak recipe (मोदक रेसिपी) is an Indian dessert recipe (link of dessert recipes). It is made of rice flour, coconut and jaggery. Modak is a sweet stuffed dumpling specially offered to Lord Ganesh during the worship on Ganesh Chaturthi festival (link of ganesh puja vidhi).

Modak recipe has two versions. In first and the most popular version, Modak is cooked on steam similar to Idli and Dhokla. Whereas, in the second version of Modad recipe, it is deep frying in Ghee.

  1. Boil water with a pinch of salt and 1 tea spoon ghee.
  2. Add rice flour in boiled water, mix it well and leave it to set.

  3. Heat jaggery in a pan.

  4. When jaggery starts to melt, add poppy seeds, coconut and raisin in it.

  5. Switch off the flame and let it cool.
  6. Meanwhile knead the soaked rice flour and make dough.

  7. Make medium sized ball from the dough and flatten it on the palms as shown here.

  8. Now stuff it with 1 tea spoon jaggery mixture.
  9. Seal it properly as shown.

  10. Traditionally it is cooked on steam. In fusion cuisine, it is also deep frying in ghee.
  11. For steam cooking, grease your steamer tray or a perforated plate with ghee.
  12. Boil water in a pan and put this plate over it.
  13. Put modak on the plate and cover with lid.

  14. Let your modak cook on steam for 20 minutes on medium flame.
  15. Delicious modak are ready to serve at room temperature.

Recipe Notes
  1. You can replace Rice Flour by Maida in this recipe.
